It is great for decoration and ambient lighting. The LED chips are WS2812B for which you will find lots of information to control them yourself as well as ready to use libraries and examples for micro controllers. On the 5m model I measure a 5.2A current at full powerso not every USB supply will do the job, also, this means that the strip should have multiple power connection points as the large current will produce a significant voltage drop and power loss if powered from the single connector provided.
