if you open this wrong you can get a nasty cut but you learn quickly how to do it by almost opening and closing you hand a quickly as you can. As far as self-defence I fear that it would probably buckle on first hit so it's more of a toy. It's somewhat based on the old magicians wand that used to do the same trick.
