I really wasn't sure what to expect given the low price of this laser engraver but I was pleasantly surprised by both the quality and performance of this unit. Assembly was very simple following the online instructions, although there are a couple of minor steps not listed where the user is left to their own intuition. After downloading the PC software (it does not operate standalone but rather needs a PC connected via USB to make it go) I was engraving wood (and chocolate) in no time with great results given the fact I had never done it before. Overall I'm very pleased with this unit and with the value of it. However as a low price unit it has some room for improvement. The software that runs on your laptop (EleksCAM) to control the engraver is a bit buggy, it has confusing menu controls and is not intuitive. Yes it works, yes you will learn to what the "Sport-T" option means by trial and error, but a little investment in improving it would go a long way in making it more usable. There are AREAS OF CONCERN where it lacks some serious safety features. Notably, when the engraver boots up it will turn the laser on for a few seconds and then turn it off. This is a DANGEROUS issue. Whatever you have under the laser will get burned, whether it's the piece you're working on or a part of your body like a hand. If there is metal there it could reflect into your eyes (and you probably don't have your safety glasses on at this point). If there's nothing under it your base, table or floor will get burned. There are workarounds such as leaving the laser's low-power switch on (which overrides the laser into a low power state instead) but you still have to remember to do this all the time and now you have the laser on all the time (albeit at a lower power). The other perhaps MORE DANGEROUS issue is driving your engraver from a laptop which for whatever reason goes into suspend mode; if it suspends while the laser is on in the middle of a burn it leaves the laser on and the engraver stops moving...at this point the laser continues to burn, and burn, and burn possibly through your material, your base, your table, your wood floor...you get the idea. Large engravings can take a very long time but you are best to be in the same room with it and not leaving it alone for these reasons. Some things I would not expect at this price but would be nice to have is a blower near the laser to remove the ash that forms, and a ventilation system. You should not expect these items at this price but if you plan to do quality engraving or a lot of engraving you will find yourself getting some wood for a frame and hoses and building these features yourself. This is a great starter system to learn about laser engraving and do some engraving occasionally. Remember though that lasers burn things in milliseconds - I would NOT recommend this for children or in a school setting because of the dangers I listed above, but for the adult "maker" that can work around those issues it is a great value.
