I connected up speakers and an old 20V laptop PSU. I turned it on and it gave a bit of a thump to the speakers followed by some 'welcome' tones'. It connected immediately to my Android tablet identified as a music device. I selected 'Local renderer' in BubbleUPnP selected a track and hit play. And out came the music with pretty good sound and plenty of volume. Listening to music with quiet passages there is some quiet digital 'burbling' going on while a track is playing that goes quiet when the track finishes playing. This can be silenced by placing a finger on certain points of the circuit board so I will need to investigate the decoupling. I suspect it is Bluetooth breaking into the audio. This is why I've given it 4* for quality; if the digital noise can be eliminated I'd give it 5*. When silent there is a barely audible digital whine almost certainly from the Class-D amp but you have to listen very hard. The Class-D amp chip gets warm but not hot although I haven't tried prolonged playing at high volumes yet. Volume control is in fifteen steps. You can press and hold to auto-increment but you need to wait a moment between single presses. The two DIP switches provide a further four preset levels. Play/pause forward and back drive BubbleUPnP correctly. Great value and promises to be an interesting little project.
